Crack Cocaine Group Work Programme (Phambili)

Several years ago Nilaari recognised that the needs of crack cocaine users in the local community were not being met by local services.  Services for opiate users were delivered well, but stimulant users repeatedly commented that they felt mainstream treatment providers had nothing to offer them.  As a direct response Nilaari devised a crack cocaine group work programme.

Phambili means to move forward

Phambili Crack Cocaine ProgrammePhambili is a culturally appropriate structured day group work programme.  Phambili consists of ten sessions over five weeks.  The structured closed programme runs on a minimum of two days a week.

The programme seeks to address crack cocaine addiction though various processes (lifestyles changes) using person centred, cognitive and solution focussed approaches.

Phambili enables participants to focus on underlying problems and teaches alternative coping mechanisms and mature problem solving techniques to replace destructive patterns.

Over the past years our experience has shown us BME users often feel excluded from existing services as they are less likely to use heroin or inject and so there are fewer opportunities for them to engage in treatment.  The Phambili is designed to encourage such groups.

The programme targets

  1. Problem crack/cocaine users who have drug (and drug and alcohol problems) problems in one or more of the following areas, psychological problems, physical problems, social problems, and legal problems
  2. Problem crack/cocaine users who want to make positive changes in relation to their problematic use and are able to control their use of drugs and alcohol sufficiently to enable them to attend and participate in the programme.
  3. Adults aged 18 years or over.
  4. Women crack cocaine users

The programme is designed to allow access to crack/cocaine users at various stages of change based on harm reduction principles.  The programme is flexible in order to meet the corresponding range of needs.  Service user feedback contributes to service development.
